It is more difficult for foreigners to find a job in Iceland

Image
As RÚV reports, foreigners currently make up almost 50% of the unemployed in Iceland, while they only make up 15-20% of the population. “This shows that foreigners in Iceland face additional obstacles when looking for a job,” says Katrín Ólafsdóttir, assistant professor of economics at Reykjavik University. The overrepresentation of immigrants in the unemployment register is nothing new. This was also the case during the pandemic […] https://nord.news/2023/09/30/it-is-more-difficult-for-foreigners-to-find-a-job-in-iceland/?feed_id=47501

Europe has a 5-point lead in the Ryder Cup as the USA comes to life

Image
(Photo credit: Adam Cairns-USA TODAY Sports) Patrick Cantlay birdied the final two holes of the afternoon to deliver a needed point to Team USA, while Team Europe still holds a 10 1/2-5 1/2 lead in the 44th Ryder Cup after Saturday's play outside Rome . Europe needs just four points from Sunday's 12 singles matches at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club to win the cup. The American team needs to win by 8 1/2 points on Sunday to keep it. Cantlay and Wyndham Clark rallied to beat Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and England's Matt Fitzpatrick 1 up in the final four-ball match on Saturday. McIlroy drained an 11-foot birdie putt on No. 14 to put Europe 1. Cantlay's tee shot at the par-3 17th landed within 10 feet, and he converted the putt to level the match again. Despite a wayward tee shot on the par-5 18th, McIlroy reached the green at the third. Cantlay's flop shot from the greenside rough flew 43 feet past the hole to set up a long b...

Team Europe extends Ryder Cup lead to 7 points over USA

Image
(Photo credit: Adam Cairns-USA TODAY Sports) Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg trounced Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9 and 7 in a record-breaking foursome session on Saturday morning, and Team Europe is five points away from winning the 44th Ryder Cup this weekend in Rome. Europe leads Team USA 9 1/2-2 1/2 after winning three of four matches Saturday morning at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, with four four-ball (best ball) matches remaining. The United States is on course to hand over the Ryder Cup after winning in a 19-9 demolition two years ago at Whistling Straits. Hovland and Aberg, the Scandinavian rising stars from Norway and Sweden respectively, won nine of 11 holes in foursomes (alternate-shot) against two of the American team's most decorated golfers on Saturday morning, leaving Scheffler to wipe away the tears of the thorough defeat. It marked the largest margin of victory for an 18-hole match in Ryder Cup history. "We're facing tw...

Sweden seeks military help against gang violence

Image
Sweden's prime minister has called in the head of the armed forces to help curb a rise in gang murders, the BBC reports. The two men and the country's police chief are meeting on Friday to discuss what role the army can play. In the past 24 hours, 12 men were shot dead in Stockholm and a 25-year-old woman was killed in an explosion in a home in a town north of the capital. "We will go after the gangs and defeat them," promised Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a televised speech. Army Chief Micael Byden told Dagens Nyheter that he was ready to help police efforts. It is not yet clear what strategy will be chosen, but it is believed that the military may take over some policing duties to allow officers to free up resources to fight crime. Twelve people have been killed since the beginning of September, the highest number since December 2019. Swedish media linked a record number of murders to disputes within the Foxtrot Network gang. Prime Minister Kristerss...

Image

Massive putts help Europe lead USA by 5 points in Ryder Cup

Image
(Photo credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports) Jon Rahm made two eagles in the final three holes of his afternoon four-ball session, and Team Europe closed the first day of the 44th Ryder Cup with a 6 1/2-1 1/2 lead over Team USA on Friday near Rome. The Spanish star teamed up with Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark to pull out of a dramatic tie with Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka of the United States after Team Europe dominated the morning's celebrations, winning all four points at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. The American team failed to win a single game on Friday. The Americans held the lead in each of the first three afternoon games, dropping ties in all three. The second of Rahm's eagles fell just minutes after Norwegian Viktor Hovland and Englishman Tyrrell Hatton rallied to tie Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. To end the day, Ryder Cup veteran Justin Rose of England won three of the last four holes himself, drawing Scottish debutant Robert Ma...

Image
STOCKHOLM, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Swedish Armed Forces have been called in to help police forces fight the recent increase in organized crime, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a press conference here on Friday. The armed forces are well equipped to deal with explosives and IT forensics as well as to organize helicopter transports. They also have extensive analytical skills that make them competent to assess risk scenarios, Kristersson said. The Defense Radio Agency (FRA), a civilian authority under the Ministry of Defence, will also be tasked with assisting the police with signals intelligence, Kristersson said. "We have increased their funding to enable them to step up their signals intelligence activities on serious cross-border crime," Kristersson said. Legislation allowing preventive wiretapping to stop shootings, bombings and other crimes linked to organized crime before they are committed will take effect on Sunday, following a decision mad...

Pakistan is creating hostile environment for minorities by promoting extremism. Analyst at the United Nations

Image
Geneva [Switzerland]September 29 (ANI): A research analyst criticized Pakistan on Friday, accusing it of creating a hostile environment for religious minorities by promoting Sunni Islamist extremism. Conor Owens, an analyst working with the European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS) while speaking at the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council said, “The recently introduced resolution that Pakistan introduced in the last session of this Council in the light of the burning of the Koran in Sweden tries to reduce expressions of religious hatred." He added "While religious intolerance should always be condemned, Pakistan's concern for religious hatred abroad is a blatant display of hypocrisy, as it is unwilling to express the same considerations within its own borders". Owens told the council that the rise of Sunni Islamist extremism, cultivated by the Pakistani military establishment, has created a hostile environment for religious minorities, ...

Team Europe jumps to early 4-0 lead over USA in Ryder Cup

Image
(Photo credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports) Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th hole just a meter away, helping Team Europe take a 4-0 lead over Team USA on the first day of the 44th Ryder Cup on Friday in Gypsy. It is the first time in Ryder Cup history that the Europeans swept all four matches in one morning session. McIlroy and Englishman Tommy Fleetwood put the finishing touches on a 4-0 lead by beating American duo Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay 2 and 1 in Friday morning's foursomes session at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. The teams had gone back and forth over the last three holes, the Americans twice moving to just 1 under. The American team appeared poised to tie the match on the par-4 15th hole, but Fleetwood sank a 20-foot par putt and Schauffele shockingly missed a 5-footer to halve. After Cantlay's first shot at no. 17 landed 20 feet away, McIlroy's sat still just 2 1/2 feet from the flagpol...

US dollar weakens as government shutdown looms

Image
NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar fell in late trade Thursday, as the U.S. Senate moved forward with plans for a temporary funding deal that House Republicans are expected to oppose. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, fell 0.41 percent to 106.2268 in late trade. The US Congress faces a deadline of midnight on Saturday to pass a new budget, but House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said there was still time for a late deal. "I wake up optimistic every day," he said. "I'd say put your money on me. We're going to get this done." On the economic data front, US gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an unrevised 2.1 percent annual rate last quarter, the government said Thursday in its third estimate of GDP for the April-June period. The U.S. Federal Reserve may be headed for "something rare" by cutting inflation without a major blow to jobs and growth, and must be extra careful about ...

Sweden is to build special prison wards for young offenders

Image
STOCKHOLM, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Sweden is to build special prison wards for young offenders in an effort to curb organized crime, the government said Thursday. The departments must be in place by 2026 and tailored for offenders aged 15 to 17, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strommer to the business newspaper Dagens Industri (DI). Currently, offenders who are too young to be incarcerated are sent to facilities run by the State Institutions Board (SiS), along with children with other psychosocial problems such as drug addiction. Strommer said the reform is necessary to ensure that teenagers convicted of serious crimes receive the best possible rehabilitation. "Dedicated wards adapted to a young target group must be built, so that offenders with education and treatment can leave without recidivism," Strommer said. This will also enable SiS to better utilize its resources, he added. Several young criminals have recently escaped SiS, in some cases wit...

7 masterpieces of Boris Grigoriev you should know

Image
This Russian artist, who was extremely popular in the West during the 1920s and 1930s, was until recently almost forgotten in his own country. And many of his works were considered lost. 1. 'Flowers' (decorative panel), 1916 Tretyakov Gallery Boris Grigoriev was born in Moscow, but studied and began his career at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. One of the prominent collectors in the capital at that time was Alexander Korovin, owner of textile stores and an art connoisseur with good taste. He was one of the first to start buying Grigoriev's works; he took painting lessons from him and the two became friends. A prominent place in Korovin's aesthetic artistic house was assigned to a vivid portrait of Vsevolod Meyerhold painted by Grigoriev. This panel from the Tretyakov Gallery, which has the collector's name in its origin, was most likely also exhibited in his house. 2. Roundup: Gang violence is escalating in Sweden

Image
STOCKHOLM, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A woman who died in an explosion in Uppsala, west of Stockholm, early Thursday became the 12th victim of gang violence in Sweden since the beginning of September, making it the country's deadliest month in four year. The woman, who was in her mid-20s, was killed by an explosive device believed to have been intended to injure or frighten a known gang member living in the same district in Uppsala, reports Sveriges Television (SVT). "The violence is inhumane, incomprehensible and limitless," quoted SVT Catarina Bowall, commanding officer at the Uppsala police, at a press conference. Late on Wednesday, two young men were killed in separate shootings in two suburbs of Stockholm. Police believe both incidents are connected to criminal gangs. Although most of the 42 people shot to death so far this year were members of criminal gangs, citizens are becoming increasingly concerned as at least seven of those killed in the pas...
