Victories over World Cup semifinalists gives Australia "belief": Yallop

CANBERRA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Matildas believe they can win the FIFA Women's World Cup after recent victories over all their fellow semifinalists, says midfielder Tameka Yallop. The Matildas will play their first World Cup semifinal against reigning European champions England on Wednesday night. The winner will face either Sweden or Spain in the World Cup final at Stadium Australia on Sunday night. Ahead of the clash, the Australians on Monday hit the training track in Sydney for a light recovery session - their first since defeating France in the longest penalty shoot-out in World Cup history. Speaking to reporters, Yallop said the squad took confidence from wins over all three remaining teams in the last 12 months. "It gives us belief. It does show that we can beat the top teams," she said. "While we can take some positives from the friendlies, we're going into this as a brand-new game and something that requires its own focus....

U.S. dollar rises on higher treasury yields

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose on Monday, as higher U.S. treasury yields boosted the American currency. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.34 percent to 103.1898 in late trading, hitting its highest level in more than a month. Analysts said investors bought the dollar as shelter from concerns about the health of the global economy. The benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields closed to 4.20 percent on Monday, a level not seen since November 2022, boosting the dollar. In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.0904 U.S. dollars from 1.0950 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound fell to 1.2675 U.S. dollars from 1.2696 dollars in the previous session. Traders braced for possible Japanese government intervention after the yen hit its lowest level on Monday since November. The U.S. dollar bought 145.5120 Japanese yen, higher than 144.9670 Japanese yen of the previous session. "Lack of...

Danish FM expresses regrets, apologies for Quran burning

ALGIERS, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Monday called his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf, and expressed his "regrets and apologies" for the burning of the Islamic holy book of Quran in the Danish capital Copenhagen. The Danish diplomat said these acts were "intolerable and unacceptable," and had run contrary to Denmark's traditions of hospitality, openness and tolerance, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Rasmussen told Attaf that the Danish government was about to finalize the text of a bill that would put an end to such practices, adding it will be submitted to the Danish parliament for deliberation in four weeks. Denmark and Sweden have seen a string of protests over the past weeks in their capitals, in which copies of the Quran were burned or otherwise damaged in front of the embassies of Muslim countries, sparking outrage in the Muslim world. https://nord.news/2023/08/14/danish-fm-expresses...
