Pakistan strongly condemns Koran burning in Sweden

ISLAMABAD, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan has strongly condemned the burning of the Muslim holy book Quran in Sweden on the first day of Eid al-Adha, the major religious holiday of Islam, Pakistan's foreign ministry said on Thursday.

"Such deliberate incitement to discrimination, hatred and violence cannot be justified under the pretext of freedom of expression and protest," the ministry said in a statement, adding that Pakistan's concerns over the incident had been conveyed to Sweden.

The recurrence of such Islamophobic incidents in recent months in the West seriously calls into question the legal framework that allows such hate-driven acts, it added.

"We reiterate that the right to freedom of speech and opinion does not provide a license to incite hatred and sabotage inter-religious harmony," the ministry said.

In the Swedish capital Stockholm, a person identified as Salwan Momika burned the Koran in front of Stockholm's mosque on Wednesday, according to media reports.

Momika, who came in front of the mosque at Medbargare Square, threw the Quran on the ground, trampled on it, uttered insulting words against Islam and set fire to the book, the reports said.
