PM Modi addresses opening session of World Climate Action Summit, attends three high-level side events

New Delhi [India]November 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the opening session of the World Climate Action Summit in the United Arab Emirates and attend the three high-level side events, two of which will be hosted by India.

Prime Minister Modi will go to the UAE on Thursday evening and attend the summit on Friday. The Prime Minister visited the UAE in July this year.

During a special briefing on Prime Minister Modi's visit to the UAE here on Thursday, Foreign Minister Vinay Mohan Kwatra said the Prime Minister will also attend an event related to the Green Credits Initiative.

"The Prime Minister will travel to Dubai later this evening to attend the World Climate Action Summit which is the high-level segment of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Departs later. this evening he will attend in the summit event tomorrow before returning to India later tomorrow evening, he said.

"Regarding attendance at COP28, the Prime Minister will deliver his address at the opening session of the World Climate Action Summit. In addition to his address at COP28, the Prime Minister will also participate in three high-level side events, two of which will be hosted by India. The first event at high-level, jointly hosted by India and the UAE, is the launch of the Green Credits Initiative," he added.

The Ministry of Environment has introduced two ground-breaking initiatives that indicate India's proactive approach to climate change and sustainability and take forward the 'LiFE' - 'Lifestyle for Environment' movement announced by the Prime Minister in 2021.

The initiatives - the Green Credit Program (GCP) and the Ecomark Scheme - aim to encourage environmentally friendly practices rooted in tradition and conservation that reflect the ideas of the LiFE concept.

Referring to the environment ministry's announcement last month, Kwatra said the green credit initiative is based on the green credit scheme.

"It basically envisions the issue of green credits for plantations on waste and degraded lands and river basins to restore their vitality," he said.

Prime Minister Modi will also attend the high-level event hosted by India and Sweden.

"The second (event on the pages) as a collaboration with India and Sweden is the launch of Lead IT 2.0, leadership group for industrial transformation. If you remember, it was a joint initiative launched by India and Sweden in 2019 at the UN climate summit in New York. Essentially, this initiative promotes cooperation between policy makers and brings together both the public and private sectors with the goal of accelerating the transition of industry to net zero emissions, mainly from heavy industry." Kwatra stated that Prime Minister Modi will attend another high level event 'Transforming Climate Finance' which will be hosted by the Presidency of COP28 - UAE.

The World Climate Action Summit is the high-level segment of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

COP28 will be held between 28 November and 12 December under the presidency of the United Arab Emirates. The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC provides a unique opportunity to energize collective action to combat the common challenge of climate change.

During COP26 in Glasgow, Prime Minister Modi announced five specific goals, titled 'Panchamrit', as India's unprecedented contribution to climate action. (ANI)
