The Finnish Red Cross stops aid at the eastern border, is still ready for future support

Previously, volunteers from the Oulu and Lapland districts of the Red Cross had also helped at the Vartius and Salla border stations. The operation involved volunteers from the Volunteer Rescue Service coordinated by the Finnish Red Cross.

At the request of the Border Guard, Red Cross volunteers at these border stations have played a key role in checking the health status of persons arriving in Finland and providing first aid if necessary. In addition, they offered warm drinks and food to the asylum seekers.

In total, Red Cross volunteers have helped 209 people crossing the border, and around 20 volunteers have devoted 622 hours to this aid activity, supported by Red Cross personnel.

Erja Reinikainen, head of the immigration unit of the Finnish Red Cross, emphasizes the organization's commitment to humanitarian aid as part of its basic mission. "Responding to people's basic needs and providing humanitarian aid is the core of our work. We prepare for exceptional situations through training and practice. Our readiness to support the authorities in taking care of people's well-being will continue whenever necessary," he says.

The Red Cross operates on the principle of humanity and offers help to those in need, regardless of their legal or social status. "Ensuring humanitarian actors' unrestricted access to those in need is paramount in all circumstances. The rights and dignified treatment of persons seeking international protection must be respected regardless of the situation. The authorities are responsible for safety, well-being and the asylum process, but the Red Cross is ready to support them in exceptional situations in the future as well," adds Reinikainen.

This announcement reflects the Finnish Red Cross's continued commitment to complying with humanitarian principles and readiness to adapt and respond to the changing needs of vulnerable population groups within Finland's borders and beyond.
