Guest Comment: Time to say goodbye to SoMe

Image
I am 19 and I have deleted my social media accounts. Here's why I think you should too. Something resonated A few months ago I decided to delete my Instagram account. On holiday with friends I watched a children's film called 'Bridge to Terabithia'. It was an incredibly authentic, relatable film; friendship and the simplicity of living were its central themes. I couldn't quite figure out the message behind it, but I just knew it did something to the way I saw the world. So after I finished the movie, I deleted all my social media accounts. The main reason I did it I think is because I felt so distant from the world and social media only took me further away from reality. I knew I had to be in the real world. And social media isn't real. It is a false reality and it is inhumane. Completely unimportant Many people may think that social media is a basic technology of the 21st century and living without it would be like riding a horse to w...

10 world events that marked the year 2022

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the protest movement in Iran, the abortion issue in the United States - 2022 was rich in different events. AFP offered a list of the 10 events that, according to the agency, marked the world this year. Putin invaded Ukraine On February 24, Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine, plunging the world into a crisis not seen since the end of World War II. Facing NATO countries that have pledged their support for Ukraine, the Russian president brandished the threat of nuclear weapons and said he was ready to use any means in his arsenal. The war caused the largest influx of refugees into Europe since the end of World War II and cost thousands of military and civilian lives. Putin, who claims he wants to denazify Ukraine, has found himself very isolated diplomatically. Westerners have imposed economic sanctions on Russia that have tightened over time, while supplying arms to Ukraine, which has also been granted EU candidate status....

Lasse Berghagen - A mixture of sweet & salty

Image
The second after Lasse Berghagen agreed to write "Stockholm in my heart", he regretted it. Now he reveals why, and talks about highlights and fads from his career and life. Like how the tears flowed when he first heard his own music and when Cornelis Vreeswijk threw his guitar into Årstaviken. Berghagen's more unknown side also comes to the fore, as a songwriter for Barbro Hörberg and Jan Malmsjö, and he is reminded of a song text he is now ashamed of. Also hear about how the engagement with Lill-Babs went and about the love for his wife Eva and the children. In addition, we get to know how he felt after getting off "Allsång på Skansen". Together, Anna Charlotta Gunnarson and Lasse Berghagen listen to archive clips and music from his long career. In the program we also meet one of Lasse Berghagen's biggest fans, Berit Holstein, who has followed him since 1965. Broadcast at 18.03 on New Year's Eve on Sweden's Radio P4. https://nord.news/20...

European companies were happy to welcome business delegations from China

FRANKFURT, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Business delegations from a number of Chinese provinces and cities recently conducted economic and trade promotion activities in Europe, which European companies said they were happy to welcome, for the huge business opportunities they could not miss. The Brexit damage continues to mount

Image
Constitution Minister Angus Robertson said: "The damage caused by Brexit is only increasing. In the two years since the end of the transition period, we have not seen the benefits of leaving the European Union. The cost of living crisis and recession are being felt more deeply in the UK than anywhere else, with recent research showing UK food bills are £210 higher over the past two years because of Brexit. Low-income households suffer the most. “The UK economy is fundamentally on the wrong track and there is no real alternative under the current system. The Scottish Government is committed to giving the people of Scotland a choice of the future they want – a greener, more prosperous and fairer economy in the European Union or a slower and stagnant economy outside the European Union. We will continue to publish Building a New Scotland leaflets to ensure people can make an informed choice. "According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, UK GD...

Eurozone bailout fund serves no purpose: Italy's Meloni

Image
ROME, Italy: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said the eurozone bailout fund serves no useful purpose, and has told the European Central Bank (ECB) to be more careful in how it communicates. In a three-hour press conference at the end of the year, Meloni, leader of the hard-right Brothers of Italy party, said, "The ECB should avoid making choices that make things worse for the bloc's economy." As expected, the ECB raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points, while signaling that more hikes would follow in the coming months, triggering a sell-off in Italian government bonds. "It would be useful if the ECB managed its communication well, because otherwise it risks generating not panic, but fluctuations in the market that frustrate the efforts made by governments," Meloni said. She also gave no indication of whether Italy would ratify a treaty renewing the so-called European Stability Mechanism, stressing that she believed no one would ever u...

Year End 2022: How a 'liberty-depriving death' took women to war against Iran's now-abolished 'morality' police

Image
Tehran [Iran]December 31 (ANI): An austere regime known for crushing dissent with an iron fist pulled out all its administrative levers to trample protests by a group of women who stood up for their rights and dignity. But all it did was light the fire. The alleged custodial death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who had come to visit her brother in Tehran on September 13, 2022, instead fell into the sights of the country's so-called morality police. She was arrested, allegedly wearing her hijab (headscarf) loosely, at the entrance to the Shahid Haghani Expressway in Tehrah and taken away by the guidance patrol, known locally as Gasht-e Ershad. She was handed over to the country's moral security where she died three days later, reportedly after falling into a coma. The death sparked fury and civil protests rarely seen on Tehran's streets, with citizens across age and gender blocking street corners and chanting death to the "morality police...

Divisive social media personality Andrew Tate detained for a month in Romania

Image
Bucharest [Romania]December 31 (ANI): A court in Romania ordered a month-long detention of divisive social media personality Andrew Tate and his brother in connection with human trafficking and rape. Tate, his brother Tristan and two others had been detained for the first 24 hours, CNN reported, citing Romania's Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT). The report said a court in Bucharest accepted an application by DIICOT to keep Tate in custody for another 30 days. Speaking to reporters outside court, Tate's lawyer Eugen Vidineac said the decision would be appealed. "From our perspective, there are no grounds for taking the most drastic preventive measures under the Criminal Procedure Code," he added, according to the Reuters news agency. DIICOT alleged that the four suspects formed an organized criminal group to commit the crime of human trafficking. They alleged that two of the suspects misled the victims...

In Winnie's World: Year End Review and Celebration!

Despite a year-long battle for a visa and custody of my daughter, I was determined to start my own business. Back then, the only thing I heard from everyone was how difficult it was to get by in Denmark - especially if you are a foreigner. Believing that nothing is impossible, I laid the foundations of my business in 2019, and when advisors told me to liquidate it during the pandemic, I kept fighting!
